Brief recap of SKC-DC at http://sportingatie.wordpress.com.
I don’t understand why Olsen waited until the 2nd half to put DeRo on. DC struggled all night to find attacking quality, and DeRo had basically their only threatening moment of the game. Seemed an odd decision in a six-pointer match.
I think this was DC’s make it or break it game with regards to the playoffs. I just don’t think they’ll have enough points to get in.
Also, I simply don’t know what to make of SKC. Are they good enough to make some kind of a run in the playoffs if they have a couple home games? I just don’t know. To be honest, I think if the #5 team from the West plays over in the East, they’ll go to MLS Cup, even if it’s Chivas.
Agreed on DC, and it would’ve been a major blow to KC if they had lost. I would say that SKC are a legitimate playoff threat. Reasons: Road record is depressed by (a) 2 awful red card decisions that robbed them of points in early season matches and (b) the 10-game roadie that sucked the life out of the team early. Since May 22, they haven’t lost in 5 road games and have only lost the 1 home match to Seattle. They have the most points in MLS since then and the 2nd or 3rd most points-per-match. The defense has solidified and the attack is constantly pressuring and doesn’t give opponents enough of the ball to put together much threat. I’m not saying they’re the best team in MLS (they’re not) or that they’ll win the cup (probably won’t). But I could easily see them finishing 2nd in the East and making a semifinal or MLS cup final appearance.
I’m a Union fan, so seeing both SKC and Houston was depressing as hell because with our current form, I just can’t see us climbing back up. We’re struggling right now, and our schedule does not get any easier. SKC looks very dangerous right now. Zusi is playing out of his freaking mind right now, and the defense is holding up well. If they can keep their current form, I could see them easily finishing second, and, if Columbus stumbles, maybe challenge for the top spot. They’ve turned LSP into a fortress akin to RSL’s run at Rio Tinto over the last 3 seasons. If they can get home field throughout the Eastern playoffs, they may be going to Carson to challenge for the Cup, and with the way the last few Champions have been crowned, it’s all down to who gets hot toward the end of the season. If SKC doesn’t shoot their wad now, and save some of this magic for the middle of October, they could be playing all their playoff games (minus 1, of course) at LSP.
I gotta disagree wholeheartedly on Aquilani. I am a huge Juventus fan (first and foremost over Blackpool), and I had to watch him tool around all last year, and not do a damn thing to make the team better. Henderson might suck, but Aquilani has equal sucktude.
Aquilani is living off of one good tournament from about 10 years ago. That’s the only reason he still keeps getting work. Teams that pick him up hope he’ll return to the form he had as a youngster, but he doesn’t, and they’re left holding onto a very expensive paperweight.
Aquilani’s preseason was better than Henderson’s, though; sure, Henderson may be good in the future, but it’s not happening now.
So happy for QPR ditching those two goons and bringing in someone who actually cares. Also for their first premier league win in 16 years! good for them.
