There’s nothing like thinking you’ve put together a pretty swell group of questions only to check your email at work to find out from one of the other writers that you forgot to remove all of the answers when you posted the questions. So, going into this week’s “reveal” we all know that everyone got at least the last question correct. Join me after the jump to see if there were any other correct answers.
There were not. However, just in case you were playing along at home I shall reveal the answers anyway.
1. In what international tournament did Czechoslovakia defeat France (3-2) in the final after defeating Belgium (4-1) the U.S. (8-2), and Canada (3-2) in group play?
The 1919 Interallied Games were a multi-sport tournament (think “Mini-Olympics”) held at, among other places, Paris’ Pershing Stadium and involving members of the recently victorious Allied powers following World War One.
2. What tournament- featuring the national teams of Mexico, Bulgaria, and Chile- was actually won by a club team?
The Los Angeles Nations Cup, held in 1985, was won by Corinthians (Brazil).
3. According to one ranking of world football clubs, what MLS club is better than- among others- Everton, Bolton, Aston Villa, Stoke City, Sunderland, Birmingham City, West Ham United, Blackburn Rovers, Wolves, and Wigan?
Believe it or not, according to the IFFHS, the Columbus Crew is better than all of these clubs. Without getting to technical, the ratings are based on how well the team has done in its league and in its federation’s (CONCACAF in this case) multi-league tournaments.
4. Who is the only Pakistani international to play in the Premier League?
Birmingham-born Zesh Rehman, who has been capped six times for Pakistan, played for Fulham from 2004-2006.
5. Only two players who have been named the Football Writers’ Association “Player of the Year” have appeared on MLS rosters- but only one of them has actually appeared in an MLS match- who are they?
Thierry Henry and Steve Nicol both won this prestigious award. Nicol, though he was listed as a “player coach,” during his first stint as manager of the New England Revolution, never actually entered a match.
6. Who is the last European club player to score over 40 league goals in a season?
Former Brazilian international Mário Jardel of Portugal’s Sporting CP scored 42 goals in the 2001-2002 season.
7. What did Sunderland’s Steed Malbranque lead the Premier League in during both the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 seasons?
No other player was subbed out of more matches that he started than Malbranque. In 2008-2009 he was taken off early 22 times in 36 matches and in 2009-2010 he was subbed out 26 times in 31 matches.
8. Name the countries, other than England, in which there is an active club named “Arsenal?”
Ukraine (FC Arsenal Kyiv and Arsenal Kharkiv), Russia (FC Arsenal-Tula), Arsenal FC (Honduras), Brazil (Arsenal FC de Frutal), Argentina (Arsenal de Sarandi), Atletico Arsenal de Salto (Uruguay), Montenegro (FK Arsenal Tivat), and Libya (Arsenal Tripoli).
So, no submissions or winners this week, but I’m stubborn, so I’ll be back tomorrow with a new challenge anyway!

Well, my submission rate is going probably drop precipitously (if possible). Tuesday nights are taken up with rugby practice, so I usually get home and just collapse.
For the record, I had 3, 4, & 5.
We’re going to have to sit down and talk about your priorities.
I turned in my homework late, teacher. And Rhys Griffiths scored 40 in 2007-08 in the Welsh Premier League.
And the questions ask for a player who scored “over” 40 league goals- ZING!
1 goal is immaterial. It’s smaller than 5%
