What you missed while playing a side-scrolling, 8-bit “Halo”…
- Sunderland fans have handled Darren Bent’s surprise departure for Aston Villa
with class and dignityby sending Bent death threats on Twitter. - Aston Villa have raised their bid for Blackpool midfielder Charlie Adam to £4 million, which is still kind of insulting; meanwhile, Blackpool manager Ian Holloway, while not opposed to Adam’s seemingly inevitable departure, thinks that Adam can do a lot better than Villa.
- Liverpool are looking to send Paul Konchesky back to Fulham, perhaps as part of a player-plus-cash deal for Clint Dempsey. As a Liverpool fan, I’d like to apologize to Fulham for continually screwing their team over.
- Liverpool are also hoping to compromise with Ajax over a purchase price for Luis Suarez; Ajax are looking for £25 million, while Liverpool are hoping to pay somewhere around £18 million.
- Glen Johnson is dating Ed Kowalcyk.
- Chelsea’s proposed deal for Benfica defender David Luiz may include a player swap, with Jose Bosingwa and £17-21 million being the ultimate cost.
- West Ham’s backing of Avram Grant doesn’t go so far as to actually offer him any funds for transfers.
- Manchester United chairman David Gill insists that United could compete with Manchester City on the transfer market if they really wanted to.
- Bayer Leverkeusen midfielder Tranquilo Barnetto will “miss several weeks” with a torn meniscus suffered against VfL Bochum.
- Lille’s 3-0 win over AS Nancy puts them four points clear at the top of the Ligue 1 table. In other news, “Ass Nancy” is a terrible name for a team.
- Oguchi Onyewu made his debut for FC Twente in a 5-0 win over Heracles Almelo; Twente striker Mark Janko scored four times to bring Twente within a point of league leaders PSV.
- Aris Thessaloniki has signed Mexican striker Nery Castillo on a six month loan; Castillo, technically a Shakhtar Donetsk player, was previously on loan with the Chicago Fire.
- The Los Angeles Galaxy have replaced Edson Buddle with former New York Red Bulls striker Juan Pablo Angel, who will become the third designated player on the club’s roster.
Fuck. and. no. No way in hell do I want Dempsey leaving for Liverpool.
Is the bright side that you get Konchesky back? Or do I already know the answer?
In addition to not wanting to see my favorite player leave my favorite team, there is the very real concern about the offense. Fulham is currently 17th in the league for goals scored (23 goals from 22 matches). Take away Dempsey’s 6 goals in the league, and then what?
Konchesky was very good in his time at Fulham, and a very capable defender, but Fulham is already tied for 6th best in the league in goals allowed (25 allowed over 22 matches).
At this point, Fulham needs to score more and getting rid of Dempsey is the exact opposite of that.
1. From Deuce’s standpoint, why go to Liverpool? I have a hard time believing there aren’t better teams in the EPL or elsewhere who would be glad to have his services.
2. Why would Liverpool want him? I think he’s a great player, but bringing him on board would have to be step #1 in a series of about 100 if they want to fix their side.
In other USA news, Danny Grella of Leeds has ended his loan at Carlisle and will now be on loan at Motherwell in the SPL for the rest of the season. I will be interested to see what my relatives in the greater-Motherwell area think about this?
That’s my thought, too. He’s a similar player to Joe Cole, and Liverpool can’t fit Cole in anywhere. His favored position – right mid – is taken up by Kuyt. He’s probably good enough to be a solid starter for some Premier League teams, though, and he should really be pushing for that.
And I’d tend to agree; if Deuce is brought in and thought of as a key player, it’s (with all due respect to everyone involved) not a move towards a Champions League finish this year or next year. Deuce means a lot to Fulham and is going to cost a lot to get; that’s money that’s probably better spent on a younger player or one that’s a bit more talented.
For the money, frankly, I can’t see why Charlie Adam is still at Blackpool. They’re supposedly only asking for 5 million, and that’s a steal for the kind of player he is.
“Glen Johnson is dating Ed Kowalcyk…”
That’s two times the ATD staff has name-checked Ed this week- we’ll be expecting a check with some of that Live money in it ASAP.
I couldn’t decide in Meireles looks more like Kowalcyk or Andre Agassi in that picture, honestly.
