While preparing this week’s column I discovered that I was missing one of the items (the 2009-2010 Scotland change socks) that I had planned on featuring. As disconcerting as that was I steeled myself and decided that I would soldier on. However, as I continued with my writing I discovered something even more troubling…I am missing a shirt. Specifically, I am missing my long-sleeved kit room quality 2008-2009 Scotland home shirt. Missing any shirt is a cause for alarm, but missing a shirt this handsome and that I had to go to great lengths just to obtain (we won’t even discuss the cost…), has literally made me sick to my stomach.
Worse yet, this is the second shirt that has gone missing (the other being my New England Revolution training shirt) in the last few months. So, this column is going to be on hold for at least a few days- and probably until next Monday- while I try to get things sorted out.
Tomorrow after I get home from work I will empty my literal closet until it is bare and go through every single item before I put it back in the hope that all (please!) of these items will turn up. If that doesn’t work I’ll give my car the same treatment. Should I still come up empty I will place frantic calls to my brother and sister in the hope that I left something with them on a past visit.
Does it sound like I’m being hyperbolic? Overly dramatic? Trust me, this is my “restrained” reaction. Those who know me in the “real world” know that I will likely have trouble sleeping until I get to the bottom of this mystery/tragedy.
Until next week…

What kind of organizational system do you have in your closet? Are things sorted by team or color?
They take up half of the hanging space in my closet (socks, shorts, hats, and a few other random items are stored elsewhere), but basically:
-Scottish National team gear
-Other (almost all USA) national team gear
-New England Revolution gear
-then the rest by country, and within the country, by club.
I’m considering going chronological within each club, but I don’t want people to think I’m weird or something!
Seriously, though, tackling this issue when I get home today has totally preoccupied me thus far in my work day.
This reminds me of the scene in “High Fidelity” where Rob’s reorganizing his record collection.
I think I speak for everyone when I say we need to see pictures of the organized kit closet.
It’s rather astounding, actually. *MY* closet isn’t that organized.
And Fuse, I’m panicking-by-proxy.
I’m considering doing just that. Perhaps some “before,” “during,” and “after” pictures.
If my Celtic shirts (three) or England Lamps shirt came up missing, there’d be hell to pay. I feel your pain. I have all my sports kit at the end of the closet past the day to day gear. I keep them separate, so I know where they are. My Celtic scarf is tacked to the wall of my office, as I have a horrible time keeping scarves for some reason…
Best of luck digging them up, sir.
I lost my US Soccer scarf on the Fourth of July 2 years ago. I was living in Dublin and got drunk at a flag rugby tournament. Woke up without my scarf or my trusty Twins hat of 5 years. I was devastated.
You never realize how much they mean until they’re gone or until they just fall apart. Replacing things has been easier in the days of Ebay, but the replacements don’t have the same meaning behind them.
Mine are sorted by country then league within that. Once I start shifting them around by table position I may need professional help.
Best wishes in your time of need. I’m still trying not to panic about 2 sets of badges I ordered from different sellers off eBay that have yet to arrive.
To those interested: I just got home after a rough day at work and I just can’t face the a) labor and b) probable disappointment that this task is going to involve. I’ll tackle it tomorrow and document it along the way.
And I thought I was panicking because the 2006/07 Fulham home replica kit I won on eBay back in late November still hasn’t arrived in my PO Box.
Best of luck – it sucks not knowing where you put personal belongings of that importance…
My kit arrived tonight! This can only be a good omen for Fuse.
Good luck finding your stuff tonight, Fuse.
It did not go well.
Next up: emptying the car.
