Things are going well for Montenegro’s Euro 2012 qualification campaign; in spite of the fact that they’re missing their best player (Fiorentina’s Stevan Jovetic, the “Montenegrin Messi”), they were still sitting on maximum points going into their Friday match against Switzerland. Sure, they’d only really had to beat Wales and Bulgaria to do that, but when your country’s population is only about 672,000 strong any success is noteworthy.
On Friday, however, Montenegro made it more interesting: a 1-0 home win over Switzerland (their third 1-0 win in three games) means that they’re now sitting with nine points from three games and on top of the table. I’m going to go out on a limb and say that this is a lot better than they thought they were going to have done.
And, really, when you’re about to be sitting on maximum points after three games (and in front of England, who have a game in hand), can you think of a better way to celebrate the goal than tearing off your shorts, putting them on your head, and running around the pitch? Video after the jump (probably safe for work).
That’s a hell of a way to earn a yellow card right there, eh?
Montenegro faces an injury depleted England tomorrow at Wembley; a draw there keeps them on top of the group, while a win will make them seem like actual contenders for qualification. There is, as yet, no word on how Mirko Vučinić will celebrate if he manages to score at Wembley.
Is he actually wearing tighty-whities?
Somewhere in here there is gag about “playing pants” but darned if I am clever enough to come up with it….
