Welcome to another Wednesday edition of Last Call. This week starts with football, football, and football. It is an exciting time of year for all kinds of football fans. The NFL pre-season starts tomorrow. The English Premier League starts on Saturday. (They do call it football there.) And the NCAA football season is just around the corner. So which football season are you most excited about right now? Who are your picks to come out on top?
In other sports news, apparently I missed the baseball brawl of the season last night while watching the US lose to Brazil. And to continue our photo’s Miami theme, the Heat are the recipients of the best NBA TV schedule ever.
If that’s not enough to get you started, here are some other brain storming ideas.
1. Posole or Abondigas?
2. Adidas or Nike?
3. This one’s a three-way. (Yes Gally, I said “three-way”…)
Batman, Spiderman, or Superman?
That’s it from me for now. You guys take it from here.

We’re leaving shortly to see Tom Petty/CSN at Phillips, so to make this quick:
1) Posole.
2) Adidas.
3) Batman. No super powers and still getting it done.
Looking forward to the Scots League, think Rangers will take the crown. In the English league, I think Man United retake the crown but I have a feeling Arsenal will make a good showing. With the English Championship, here’s hoping Cardiff finally make it up so we can stop hearing about them trying and failing every year. It would be nice to see AFC Wimbledon make it into the League.
For US Football, here’s hoping the 49′ers do well and Atlanta as well. In college, I’ll be happy as long as Auburn beats Alabama.
Tom Petty is awesome! I saw him at Vegoose a couple of years back. It was easy to see why he has been so successful for so long. Be warned though, you will get a “contact” high at the bare minimum.
The show was amazing. They sound fantastic and the set list was a great mix of everything you’d want to hear and some unusual things. His cover of Fleetwood Mac’s Oh Well was great, Mike Campbell tore it up. As for the contact buzz, no shit right? You could see people lighting up all over and the funny thing? Atlanta PD tried to walk through the crowd for like 10 minutes and then due to the volume of people lighting up: They gave up. Funny as hell. The people two rows down from us were like 50′s – 60′s and they sparked up during the second song and it was *strong*. LOL
1)neither
2)Nike
3) wow, that’s tough. Batman’s got all kinds of cool toys, Spiderman can dangle you 20 stories up over 5th Avenue in midtown, and Supe’s the “Man of Steel”. Tough choice for a dame.
Wait, what?
Bill Hall!!!!
1) Had to look up abondigas, but every New Mexican knows what posole is. Most of them love it; I’m not too enamored by the dish, but done right, it is brilliant.
2) Nike for clothing; adidas for shoes.
3) Batman. Superman’s essentially the embodiment of American propaganda; Spiderman was good until it was towed through the emotional teenage morass by the recent series of films; Batman has gone from camp to cool thanks to the Frank Miller novels and the Chris Nolan films.
Oh, and football! Denver looks to be ripe for disappointment; New Mexico is New Mexico…so I’ll be paying extra attention to Fulham, Rochdale and MLS/Liga Mexicana.
1) Don’t know what either is.
2) Adidas.
3) Spiderman; good mix of mortality and super powers.
Now, on to my question: my wife is taking 5 grams of Creatine daily (under a doctor’s orders, NOT for any muscle/bodybuilding purposes) and is having some nausea issues. Any Creatine takers here know if that’s normal?
When I was on it, I was sorta pukey. Of course, this just makes it a sample size of 2, so…not statistically relevant. You can probably find info on webmd, assuming you can keep your head and not convince yourself you have some rare, incurable disease.
She actually DOES have a rare, incurable disease, which is why she’s on the creatine in the first place; WebMD’s a permanent bookmark, not sure why I didn’t check there first. Thanks!
Had a friend on it about 10 years ago. The nausea seemed to pass when he started drinking extra water. Took about a week as I remember for him to get over it.
Lets go Dodgers.
Albondigas
Nike, though more a New Balance fan myself. For cleats though, have to go with adidas, all others split on the side before the season was ever over. I must run strangely.
I’ve long thought Supes was a stooge, and Spiderman…well, up till they started tossing everything about him into teh wind in the 90′s, he was cool. Since then, a mess. Batman though, well, Miller and Nolan have done everything that needs to be done to make a comic legend. Trying to explain the importance of the Dark Knight Returns to todays kids is like trying to explain the significance of Blade Runner. If you weren’t walking through the wasteland, you jsut don’t know.
As for Football…I’m not looking forward to the college season at all really. The BCS over the years has just burnt me out. Bob Stoops had a lot of balls to come out and say that the fact win and loss mean so far more then they should that nobody should or will schedule tough games, is hopefully a slap in the face for the NCAA to make a playoff. the risk of a loss so out weighs the value of a win it’s absurd.
Looking forward to the NFL more this year then in a long time. Can hardly wait. think the Ravens will be far better offensively then defensively, which is going to seem Bizarro World. I think the Packers, my team of choice to root for, are being overrated as they will have trouble stopping anybody. I think the Seahawks are the NFC sleeper and that the Chargers are going to win their division with about a 9-7 record and get blown out in the playoffs.
I’m intrigued by the EPL this year. On paper I think Man City might take it all. They sure seem to have the talent in a year when everybody else seems to be about playing guys who would have been backups three years ago. As usual, IF Arsenal can stay healthy, they have a very good shot at winning, while I think Man U is done.
So yes, this means I’m picking Chelsea as back to back winners.
1. Chelsea
2.Man City
3.Arsenal
4.Man U
5.Spurs
6.Liverpool
Love the Titans this year. Not to win the division over my Colts of course. But all Vince Young does is win. If Fisher is smart, he’ll do a lot more read-option type stuff and Young and CJ will be unstoppable.
My Bible length post intimidated everybody!
Nonsense. Only Fuse and I wield the power to kill a Last Call.
I’ve been known to bring many an LC to a crashing halt with my inanity, thank ya.
Clancy can kill them before they ever get started!
Fuck and yes. I’m glad I’m finally getting the credit I deserve.
Hey Martin,
You missed a pick for Seattle/Chivas in the Pick’Em…head back over there and take care of that before Saturday.
If this picture above is any indication, I can see why LeBron took his talents to South Beach. I would too.
Hrm. Just announced on the NYRB game – World Soccer Reader is reporting that Bradley is departing as coach of the USMNT. Unconfirmed as of yet, however.
Oh you sweet talker you!
Is he taking the Villa job?
It hasn’t been confirmed, and nothing else was offered up, other than that apparently he had a meeting with the team last night. Which could mean anything, or nothing at all.
Anyone still here, would you rather a Sunday Brunch about assaulting the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh with bodily fluids or save that for another day and recap what did (or mostly didn’t) happen in sports while I was out of town?
BTW, Sculptor, there will be more Cockburn content soon. It had a very powerful role in my vacation.
I vote for recap on what didn’t happen in sports for Sunday Brunch. The Civic Arena story sounds like a Last Call story!
I couldn’t decide – I told him to throw a dart.
1) Huh? I guess Abondigas.
2) Nike. Adidas shoes are too narrow for my water skis.
3) Batman. Slightly off kilter, always thinking a step ahead of the opposition.
And as for football, my order of operations is as follows: Gophers, Manchester United, Vikings. After that: Whatever’s on.
