During his long playing career current Kansas City Wizards coach Peter Vermes achieved a great many distinctions. He was named as one of the top high school players in the state of New Jersey in the 1980s. In college he was a first team All-American and a runner-up for the National Player of the Year while at Rutgers University. As a professional he played in Hungary, the Netherlands, and Spain before returning to the States to embark on a an eight year career in MLS that would include time with the MetroStars, Rapids, and Wizards- winning the MLS Cup and being named the league’s Defender of the Year in 2000. Vermes also represented the national team on 67 occasions, playing in the 1988 Olympics, the 1990 World Cup, and the 1991 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
All of this is, no doubt, very impressive, but Vermes holds one other distinction and it is the one you will need to discover in order to complete this week’s challenge. Join me after the jump and I will present you with your task for the week.
Find the answer to the following question: In the history of MLS (1996-2009) what feat is Peter Vermes the only field player to accomplish twice?
If you really want to show off you can tell me what was special/unique/different about the second time he achieved this feat?
Your hint: It’s not on his Wikipedia page, so you can skip it.
As always, send your answers to me at avoidingthedrop@gmail.com by midnight EST on Tuesday for publication on Wednesday and don’t put your answers in the comments section!
