As a heat wave sweeps over most of the U.S. of A., I hope that you find yourself in air conditioned comfort while joining us tonight. If not, then I hope you have plenty of your favorite ice-cold beverage of choice. The soccer slate tonight is full. English superteam Manchester United will playing MLS’s Philadelphia Union.
The final two games of the group stage of the SuperLiga will be played tonight as well. Houston Dynamo need a win over group leader Puebla to assure themselves a place in the semi-finals, while ChivasUSA and Pachuca will play for pride. Elsewhere, baseball season continues as teams seek to secure those last few players to help them through to October. LeBron fever seems to have finally run its course just in time for a possible NFL strike/lockout to start ramping up.
Since it worked so well last week I’ll try this again.
Tonight’s brainstorming topics are:
Pancakes or Waffles
Bottles or Cans
Coke or Pepsi
and
Almonds or Peanuts
Two Yellows will be cursing ManU players tonight, but I’ll be checking with witty banter (and Dynamo updates). Please make yourselves comfortable and enjoy each others’ company.

Also, commenters, send your EFFIN’ Droppies ballots to me at avoidingthedrop@gmail.com
The deadline is midnight!!
I sent mine. Unless you want the transfer of the year to be Damien Duff from Newcastle to Fulham, get your ballots in! (Didn’t actually nominate that one. Still, vote.)
1)Waffles. They’re just flat out more versatille. Now if it were crepes, this would be another story.
2)This one is tough. Bottled beer tastes better, though it can spoil faster. Cans, in general, hold more beer. I think cans win here.
3)Pepsi. I don’t have a valid reason here, but it just seems to work better. Though if coke didn’t de-alkalinize the coca leaves it would be a different story.
4)I’m torn on this one as well. Peanuts are more versatile and the ex really got me into them. Shut up, it’s a legit, non dirty story. Having said that almonds, while poisonous if not prepared right, are much sweeter and have a more complex flavor. Plus they make almond liqueur, such as Amaretto, while I have yet to see peanut liqueur. The booze factor pushes this one in almonds favor.
I’ve got to think there’s somewhere here in Southern Canada that makes booze out of peanuts. I’m going to guess it’s somewhere in the mountains of Georgia.
Damnit man, when will these stereotypes end? Just because they’re making sweet tea flavored vodka now and selling moonshine legally…
You’re in Southern Canada? I never knew that…
Sorry, just trying to even out the cross-border paternalism with a little humor- or if you prefer, “humour.”
I’ve been to Canada, though! Quebec and all of the Maritime Provinces!
Haha, well put eh!
Waffles. By far. Those little squares are like secret compartments of buttery syrupy goodness.
Bottles. Cans stack better in coolers, but bottles say “I’m an adult enjoying this beverage” while cans say “Im a college student who can’t afford good beer”. Plus soda bottles are resealable.
Coke. Its weird, but I prefer Coke to Pepsi BUT diet Pepsi to diet Coke. Pepsi is too sweet for me if I’m drinking more than a sip. Coke’s aftertaste is preferable. Screw em both, give me an A&W.
Raw its gotta be Peanuts. Especially at a ball game. Cooking though, Almonds are a much better taste. Especially slow roasted candied almonds from the vendor at the mall.
holy dogballs, where did you come from? I haven’t heard from you in what, almost a year?
howthehellareya?
Good. yeah, its been a while. I fell out of the loop a lot. Suddenly realized I hadnt talked to any of the old duan crew in a long long time. Except Yost.
Missed you guys. Plus I feel left out.
aww. well, welcome back!!!
I almost called you last weekend. Was at a wedding in Absecon
Who all hangs out around these parts now?
1) waffle- see gally.
2) bottles- better tasting, ability to open for a hot chick. Easy convo starter
3) coke zero- not too sweet as opposed to diet pepsi.
4) peanuts- the butter and the ballgame
1) waffles. definitely. think about it, you’ve never heard of fried chicken and pancakes, have you? no. also, you can get your OCD on with waffles.
2) bottles, both alcohol and soda. the contents just taste better.
3) mexican coke if we’re talking fully loaded. diet pepsi if we’re talking fake-o stuff.
4) i’m calling a tie – they’re both very versatile in the kitchen, and butter toffee almonds/peanuts or chocolate covered almonds/peanuts are both serious NOM for snackage..
I always pick up way to much Kosher Coke every Passover. With the amount of cola I drink at home it last till about January. Its the same as Mexican Coke, but you can find it on the shelves in a regular store.
yeah, same stuff. I just assumed if I said Passover Coke, no one would know what I meant. And I’ve often found “kosher” Coke with corn syrup in it.
I mentioned fried chicken and waffles in a conversation last Friday at work, and the three people in the room looked at me like I’d grown a second head.
Ingrates.
seriously? cripes, they talk about it on food network, it’s not like it’s from Mars or sommat.
Nowadays, New Mexico looks roughly like a Mars set from Total Recall, so maybe that’s it.
1. Waffles… Like Sculptor said, chicken and waffles.
2. Bottles of anything is just kick ass.
3. Coke. I have a case of it in the fridge.
4. Tie. And in Atlanta I found a kick ass form of pecans at the Hand in Hand called “Tabasco Pecans.”
Pro: What Fenway looks like with a proper pitch laid out across the outfield.
Con: How unbelievably bad the NESN pregame show is. Tom Carron does a nice job with Red Sox pre/post game stuff, but he’s embarrassing himself in only the first five minutes.
Oooh, that DOES look nice.
I dislike Celtic FC, but I also dislike ManU, so I guess I’ll flip back and forth between this and the ManU/Union game.
Should be plenty of goalmouth action at Fenway- regulation width but 12 yds short in length.
Also…
Dear somewhat hot NESN Sideline Reporter,
Interviewing Neil Lennon and referring to the club he manages as “The Celtic” should get you shot.
Especially since your last name is MACARTHY!!
Cheers,
Angry Fuse
1. Waffles: Love me some Waffle House, don’t hate.
2. Bottles: Unless you’re fishing or mowing the lawn, you shouldn’t NEED a can of anything.
3. Coke: Mexican Coke. In bottles. Made from sugar. And crack cocaine. Just…just buy some.
4. Peanuts: Fresh-roasted in-shell with-a-beer at-a-ballgame. But smokehouse almonds are kinda cool too.
And now to put my new rice cooker to the test and get some Chinese takeout. See you kids in an hour or so.
Nuthin’ but love for Waffle House, somehow its always there when you need it…like one time at 3am in Oklahoma City during a cross country drive…
There are plenty of Portuguese/Brazilian/Cape Verdean-Americans in the Boston area, but make no mistake, this is a Celtic home match.
Also, where’d everyone go?
Refill, in my case. Speaking of, I need to go grocery shopping tomorrow – you want a 2-liter of Mt. Dew?
Sure!
You got it. Anything else?
And here’s a treat, Craig brought McVitie’s back from England, so we’ve got snax for Friday.
Pancakes or Waffles – Waffles.
Bottles or Cans – Bottles for booze, soda in cans.
Coke or Pepsi – Diet Sierra Mist.
and
Almonds or Peanuts – Allergic to almonds, love peanuts.
Padres 2 – Braves 0, 3rd inning and 2 men on base for the Pads. DAMNIT.
While happy Gally hasn’t returned yet, I think I can safely say that bitter, hateful sad Gally has gone into hibernation. More of an indifferent Gally, until footbaw season anyways.
The other day, one of the local fresh food made daily type bistros had a sandwich that used waffles for bread and the filling was tomato, cheese and hot chicken breast…
Random thought before I get back into learning brain chemistry and structure, Trent Reznor’s new project, How To Destroy Angels, appears to be good studying music. Soft lyrics, nice and rhytmic and not real aggressive.
agreed, HTDA is pretty tight.
And Philly seems to be giving the ManU scrubs a good match.
haha! Scholes just got a yellow.
So I make my triumphant return and its for soccer? Boo.
Im going to ManC/Inter Milan next week, thats enough soccer for me.
Hahaha. Dude, ATD **IS** a footy blog. But honestly, there’s not much else on right now anyhow.
I know.. but still lol.
Where you in Chicago with the rest of them last week?
ummm, rest of who?
I was just in Chicago this last weekend for an art conference, and I had lunch with Old King Clancy, but I don’t think that’s what your talking about, it is?
nah. The old duan seemed to have a gathering. I know that the group fractured, but I noticed on FB that you were there the same time.. thought maybe there was something I missed.
I need to start deleting some of them off my FB though, I really don’t care for some of the hipster douchebags.
Don’t worry, we’ll start ripping into…(checks TV Guide)…well.
There’s nothing on, so I guess it’s a pop vs. soda debate tonight.
Carbonated beverage?
That leaves room for Perrier – DISAGREE! Back to my glass of ice-water – as I have no pop/soda in-house.
So…umm…anyone watching Houston v Puebla on Telefutura? Just me then?
It’s 0-0, and neither team has too much incentive to play to win this match since they’re the top two in their group…but it’s the only soccer I’ve got tonight. Let’s go someone!
I thought MLS Direct Kick is free this week? Though that doesn’t mean any other game is on besides the one on ESPN2 (ManU/Union, just gone to the half). Celtic FC/SC Portugal is on NESN, if the MLS DK opened it up.
Don’t have cable ATM. Figure it’s a waste of money until August/September when shows and sports start again in earnest.
But, I do have SuperLiga, so game on!
I prefer summer cable. The USA/TNT shows are pretty good, and I <3<3<3 True Blood
Oh, believe me, I’m going through major-league Burn Notice withdrawal right now – I just can’t justify $80/month for something I won’t watch much of. Fall months, another story. Soccer, football, basketball and all manner of shows on FX.
Get thee to the public library! Hulu and USA both have full episodes one after they air. USA keeps the full season I believe. Hulu just 3 episodes..
I’m waiting for them to post a new episode, haven’t done one since Neighborhood Watch three weeks ago!!! Oh well, I can watch The Good Guys, fair substitute for Burn Notice, I guess.
Good evening folks. Go read the Phoenix Pub post about the Ilya contract (Hoc-key. Like soccer on ice).
I’ll take all the pancakes you folks are passing up, too.
Yes, and if you (meaning everyone) have good ideas for more sports law posts, send them over to F’(x). I’m a bit distracted right now, but I’ll ask my lawyer friends if they have any suggestions.
Anyone going to Spurs/Sporting Sunday??
Darren Fletcher…clap…clap…clap-clap-clap!!
I can’t figure this Union game out. Philly’s really giving ManU fits – is this because Sir Alex is fielding 9th string players, or is Philly actually capable of some higher level play?
Most of the big names are there, but they haven’t been on the field at the same time.
I’m guessing the heat/humidity isn’t helping either.
Also, this Celtic-Sporting match is getting just a bit spikey!!
Celtic and Scotland’s Scott Brown is hard as nails.
Okay, that’s valid. I’m still thinking that most any EPL team’s 2nd/3rd string should be able to soundly beat an MLS team, particularly an expansion team. As it is, it’s only 1-0 ManU in the 85th minute.
Probably a little of it being the Man U taxi squad, and a little of it being the preseason for Man U. Where’s MRD to invent an appropriate word to describe this when we need him?
I dunno, but I miss his spectacular expletives.
Heh, Puebla gives up a goal to Houston and promptly swaps out their goalkeeper. 1-0 Dynamo, 68th minute.
Hey all in Tri-state Area-
Spurs/Sporting on Sunday – should be a good match, and I’ll be there. I hope some of you are there,
Nope, I won’t be there. But make sure you take good notes for a post!
Celtic FC just scored on a penalty kick? Bollocks to that.
Was it Samoras again? That’s been the story of the preseason so far for the Hoops.
If I told you someone put the ball on goal, but missed off the crossbar, who would say it was? One guess.
Who would you say it was? DERP
It was Brian Ching, goal repellent personified. Surprised? No.
HA!!!
Hey, pub traffic, last call is starting to p/u…it’s been a good day. Legitely has me in a good mood.
p/u = pick up?
yesh. particularly when it’s here.
At least 20 percent of that traffic is just me. Wednesdays just seem to work for me for some reason.
Dammit, why didn’t they taze that bro?
Penalty kick shoot out? In an off-season friendly? WTF? I didn’t account for that in my pick-em.
I mean, not that this game matters, but ick.
We didn’t have this match in our pick ‘em – did we? Thought it was only MLS and SuperLiga (which can end in a draw, but hasn’t thus far this week).
no, we didn’t. I just don’t like shoot-outs.
hahahahahahahaa one of the dogs just dutch-ovened the other one (I moved upwind of the blanket fluffing manoeuvre.
Perhaps an analysis of the American Needle vs. NFL case for future Pub Law?
Also, waffles at home, pancakes out.
Coke from a fountain, Pepsi from a bottle. I prefer diet coke far over diet pepsi though.
Bottles are for drinking, cans are for throwing trash in.
Peanuts for just eating over almonds. Almonds for adding to anything cooked, or salads.
Also, just had a friend return a box he had mistakenly taken when we had moved out of a place. WTF am I going to do with 4,000 Legend of the Five Rings cards?
Make a nerd’s life? I dunno – I’ve got several football and baseball card collections upstairs that aren’t worth much (if anything) that I should get rid of, now that you’re making me think about it.
Woohooo..I’ve still got one favorite team in SuperLiga! Way to go Dynamo! As an added bonus, Danny Cruz (UNLV Alum) got to play the full 90. And now ChivasUSA is winning too?
I guess the real question is Will my Spanish get better as a result of all these games only being televised on Galavision and Telefutura?
I know mine won’t. They talk too fast – I can’t follow in my baby Spanish.
Woohooo! Glad there’s still somebody up back East. I’m gonna have to find me a West Coast blog that keeps the same hours as I do…
Heh. sorry to disappoint ya, but i’m headed off to bed-i hafta get up at oh-dark-thirty for a dentist appointment.
catch you lot tomorrow!
I’ve been watching games on those networks for 3 years now – I can tell you what a tiro esquina is, otherwise I’m useless.
Corner kick, BTW.
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLL!!
I know that one too.
Ooh, ooh, forgot, I do know se la perdio – He missed it. Used by Pablo Herrera from Telefutura/Univision after a particularly poor miss on goal.
Is anyone who’s still up a “runner”? I am having a hard time getting my 5K time under 29mins..Is that a good time for 43yrs and 205lbs (trying to get to 185)?
Have you gone back and forth with @roto_tutor? Find him on Twitter and ask him some questions; he’s all about the running.
I am off to Twitter to follow him now…thanks for the lead.
Kevin- it’s a very respectable time.
Two years ago at age 39 I ran one in 28:35 on a VERY hilly course on a 20 degree Thanksgiving morning.
My best times- on a relatively flat course- while training for that race were in the 26:00- 28:00 range.
I’m currently (started July 4) training for the same race, but having to start very gradually as I’m hoping not to suffer the same injury that kept me out of last year’s race.
I think what you’re going to find is that you’re going to reach a point where your times will bottom out unless you’re willing to change your diet, adopt a “pro” training regimen, etc., and even then, you may just reach your body’s physical limit.
I was surprised I got as fast as I did, because I am not built like a runner- at all!
Just as an FYI: Last time I trained by running 1,2, or 3 miles about five days a week depending on how I was feeling, work schedule, weather, etc. and I feel like it worked. This time I’m running a 5K 3-4 times a week and looking for consistent progress.
Finally, check out http://www.runkeeper.com
Or just email me if you want to discuss things.
I am actually running that time on the treadmill 3 times a week. I took one run outside, but the heat in Vegas is truly killer this time of the year. I drank a full liter of water by 20 minutes into my only outdoor run on Monday.
I have actually lost about 20lbs since the first of March. Some diet changes.. gave up donuts and a Big Gulps for breakfast for Mini-Wheats and OJ. Drinking mostly water during the day with milk at meals. Started out walking and worked up to running.
I really need to start bringing a lunch from home rather eating school lunches with the kids while I’m supervising the cafeteria at our school. (I can probably lose another 10 pounds right there!)
I’ll check out the website and send you an e-mail with some more questions tomorrow.
