We’ve got one hour left to wait for this thing to finally get moving today. By this point, you’ve read the previews, you’ve filled out your brackets, you’ve finagled your days off, and you’ve prepared your spouse and/or significant other for the likelihood that you’ll be pretty busy for at least the next two weeks (the games slow down a bit after the group stage).
If you’ve been following along, there’s nothing that I’m going to tell you that you don’t already know. In fact, the only thing that’s left to do is to see out your finely-laid plans.
I’ve got nothing to add today, but I would like to know from the readers: What plans DO you have? Personally, I took a week’s vacation off (starting either on Monday or at 10:00 AM EST today, depending on whether we’re going by the official or unofficial H.R. definition), and starting Monday I’ll likely spend a fair chunk of my time off at The Pub in Rocky River. If you’re in the area, swing in and say hi. For tomorrow, one of my brothers is in from North Carolina unexpectedly, which would normally be great; I had to have the awkward conversation with my mother the other day that “I’m glad he’s here, but he’s really not a priority of mine on Saturday.” Fortunately he’s in agreement with me, and we’ll have a virtual family reunion for the game tomorrow, which should go well.
So, fine readers, while you’re waiting for kickoff, I want to know from you: what’re you planning on doing to commemorate the World Cup this year?
I’ll be watching from Spain until the knockout rounds. Can’t wait.
I normally travel for work M-Th (a consultant’s life). But I finagled a week working from home the week of 6/21 so I can watch the final USA group stage match live.
I’ll be at The Globe pub in Chicago for the USA-England match. Let me know if any of you will be there.
I’ve decided to overhaul my website, as opposed to sculpting. Which means lots of time in front of the computer. Downstairs. Where the gigantic telly is.
Thank (insert your diety here) for ESPN3!!!!….I have arranged for all reports to be due this next two weeks so that the game is one computer and my reports are on the other…
Correct that…SCREW ESPN3 and Cox Cable…apparently they didn’t think to check that their bandwidth could handle the traffic for the World Cup…no remote login…no stream in Las Vegas…
ESPN has said that all matches would be broadcast on ESPN Radio and ESPNRadio.com. I turned on .com this morning and heard Colin Cowherd (insult to injury much?). Anyone know what’s up with that?
Try going to SoccerNet and following a gamecast – there is a radio button for each match in their gamecast, I believe.
As for me, I’ll watch matches when I can, but the bulk of my World Cup will be spent on gamecasts at work. Not so bad; I’m used to it while following Rochdale matches. I will be at Gecko’s Pub and Tapas in Albuquerque tomorrow morning for USA/England though. Should be a decent atmosphere, or as decent as can be found in this town.
