Sunday matches always held more intrigue for me, especially as a kid, because it just seemed more important somehow. There were not too many mid-week matches, I felt like I never got to go to those anyway because of school responsibilities. Saturday matches happened all the time. Today’s slate of matches, especially on television and over the internet, are especially delicious.
Let’s do some newsy notes first, though.
Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice, as Real Madrid got three goals in six minutes to ease comfortably away from Xerez, then said he might be open to a return to Manchester United someday.
The Southampton-Portsmouth FA Cup match turned into a Pompey romp, but the supporters felt like expressing their emotions physically after the match. Anyone who couldn’t see that coming was fooling themselves.
After a horrendous start, Roma has torn up the table and now stand in second place in Serie A. AC Milan, who face Manchester United this week in the Champions League, are in third.
Ruud van Nistelrooy scored two times in three minutes yesterday to lead Hamburg to a 3-1 victory over Stuttgart.
Liverpool are apparently in the frame to add both Milos Krasic and Milan Jovanovic at the end of the season, giving them a much more Serbian look.
With labour negotiations still going on, MLS clubs such as Dallas and Los Angeles began their pre-season friendlies.
Aberdeen came back from three one-goal deficits to get a 4-4 draw with Celtic yesterday, while league leaders Rangers were preparing for Hibs today. Site favorites Ross County came from two goals down to earn a draw with Dumfernline.
Montpellier continued an amazing season as their win over Grenoble pushed them into a tie for first at the top of the Ligue 1 table.
