“It’s a tense time for managers. They have to exhume confidence.” – Gary Lineker

- It’s a big day on Merseyside
It’s derby day in Liverpool, and that match bookends a pretty good schedule in the Barclay’s Premier League today. The late match sees Spurs home to Aston Villa in what should be a cracking contest. It’s a good television day, today, so if you need a footy fix before that Super Bowl thing tomorrow, you’ll get your fill.
It’s been a strange year for both clubs, Everton and Liverpool. Neither has certainly lived up to pre-season expectations, but have come on a bit since the calendar changed to the new year. Everton currently sits in ninth place, and has been given a boost by American wingman/striker Landon Donovan since his arrival. Their record is not anything gaudy, to be sure, but the fact that eight wins, eight draws and seven losses is good enough for ninth at this point should tell you all you need to know about the quality of the league this year. For Liverpool, their struggles all season have been evident, but the funny thing is, they could take over fourth place today with a win and a Spurs draw or loss. I give Rafa Benitez credit for playing with a bare-bones squad all season, quite frankly. He baffles me at times (but a lot of English league managers do, to be fair), but he’s holding on and trying to get that fourth place spot. This should be quite a contest, today, and thank God it will be on ESPN in high definition.
The rest of the television schedule looks to be decent, including Real Madrid/Espanyol late in the afternoon, and lots of Mexican action later in the day.
I wanted to address the John Terry situation, and today seems to be the day to do so since Chelsea is not playing until tomorrow. As an Englishman, I find Terry’s recent behaviour to be reprehensible. I’m happy with yesterday’s decision to strip him of the captaincy of the English national team and I hope he can find some sort of stable ground and get his life in order. That being said, I also could not be prouder of the way Fabio Capello handled this. He stayed away from the press, he did not make a comment until after he had met with Terry, and afterwards, he commented about the team structure and not the actual events that occurred. Capello is a force to be reckoned with and is a man hell-bent on having a good showing in South Africa. I’m firmly behind our gaffer. I actually am proud of our manager for the first time in a long time.
Okay, let’s look at the telly schedule really quickly:

Cheers.

That’s interesting, do you have a newsletter?
In other action, GOOOOOOOOOOOAL, JOZY ALTIDORE!!
Hull lead Citeh, 1-0.
Couldn’t agree more, Capello could have made a huge mess of this, something most managers would have done. He kept his head and definitely went about the whole situation the right way.
I woke up looking at six inches of snow, I’m currently watching Man City underachieve (as I wrote that Adebayor cracked one home off of a corner). Looking forward to a nice cup of hot chocolate while watching the Spurs/Villa match, heres to a great match.
Mags that was a very nice finish from him, hopefully the start of more to come!
Three own goals?!
Forget what I said earlier in the week about all of us pooling our spare change to buy Pompey.
This just in: The fifth round Scottish Cup tie between Ross County and Stirling Albion…9-0 to County. That’s right, 9.

Niiiiiiice.
Nine goals and you almost didn’t have a hat trick; nice distribution of the efforts.
My father’s hate for Martin O’Neill knows no bounds, he’s never liked him and he was incredibly incensed by Villa’s “poor, boring, negative display” today. Of course, Spurs couldn’t put one past a club team lately, so. Yeah.
