Well, just like that, everything is solved- at least for 2010.
According to today’s press release USL-1 and NASL will compete as separate divisions of the same league this summer (including inter-league play and a championship match between the two divisions) all under the watchful of the USSF. Both sides will use the breathing space created by this temporary arrangement to continue to work toward a satisfactory solution for the future.
The league will be structured as follows:
USL CONFERENCE
Austin Aztex
Minnesota Thunder
Portland Timbers
Puerto Rico Islanders
Rochester Rhinos
Tampa Bay Rowdies
NASL CONFERENCE
Crystal Palace Baltimore
Carolina RailHawks
Miami FC
Montreal Impact
AC St. Louis
Vancouver Whitecaps
This of course leaves the future of one team initially expected to take part in each league- Atlanta Silverbacks in the NASL and F.C. New York in USL-1, unclear at best. However, given that Atlanta was already on hiatus and New York may or may not exist, this seems to have been either a prudent move on the part of both leagues, or a necessity given the state of both clubs.
So, that’s where we stand. The USSF and the leagues (league?) promise further updates with more details- you’ll know them when we know them.
Good – now get the MLS solid and enjoy 2010.
