What you missed while Portuguese men-of-war were invading Ireland (your move, Robbie Keane)…
- Barcelona lost the home leg of the Copa del Rey 2-1 to Sevilla; should they be knocked out, it will be the first trophy they’ll have failed to win since Pep Guardiola took over last season.
- Here’s a calming thought for all you Arsenal fans: Wenger’s basing his transfer market strategy around Nicklas Bendtner.
- To be fair, however, at least your team has a strategy. Unlike, say, Liverpool.
- Man City’s strategy of buying players at random has hit a snag: Estudiantes captain Juan Sebastian Veron has turned down Roberto Mancini’s offer to come to Eastlands.
- Also, Manchester City have reported a loss of £92.6 million, which represents the biggest loss ever reported by a Premier League club.
- Stoke City 3-2 Fulham; this was apparently an awesome game. It was also played on a day where it was announced that two other games would be cancelled due to weather issues.
- Côte d’Ivoire manager Vahid Halilhodzic is mad that Chelsea have worn Didier Drogba out.
- Meanwhile, Barcelona defender Kolo Toure was named the Côte d’Ivoire Player of the Year for his success in the Champions Leage. It’s possible I just like typing “Côte d’Ivoire”.
- This one’s for you, WSR: Former owner Alexandre Gaydamak takes no responsibility whatsoever for the current financial state of Portsmouth.
- Queens Park Rangers owner Flavio Briatore’s Formula One ban has been overturned by the International Automobile Federation.
- Former Italian national team defender Marco Materazzi will spend the World Cup in the one place on earth he can complete avoid ever hearing about soccer: in a motorhome travelling around the U.S.
- The Worldwide Leader announced yesterday that they’ll be broadcasting World Cup matches in 3-D. Meanwhile, Fox Soccer Channel still has yet to broadcast in high def (January, right?).
- Samuel Eto’o's first objective at the African Cup of Nations is to break the individual goal scoring record for the African Cup of Nations. His second objective: for Cameroon to win games.
- Finally, if you’re not regularly checking Darius Vassell’s blog, than you really need to start. The Guardian has some excerpts, which sort of reads like a Bret Easton Ellis short story (without the excessive drug use).
The best thing about the Fulham-Stoke City match? A 35 yard stunner through the snowflakes by none other than Clinton Drew Dempsey.*
DEUCE!!!
*which only kinda made up for the “bunny” that he missed in the same match.
I would have totally watched this game, too. I love sports played in crappy weather; it completely changes them, and it’s fun to watch the players try to adapt.
Was it on TV?
Setanta showed it live, since the Carling Cup matches were canceled. I think they’re replaying it again today. It’s worth watching for Deuce’s goal alone, if you haven’t caught it yet.
Did you mean to refer to Barcelona’s defensive mid-fielder Yaya Toure? Or to Man City’s defender Kolo Toure?
Has to be the Yaya, considering that the award was for Champions League play.
