First of all, thanks to all of you who participated this week- it might have been our best turn-out yet!
The challenge was as follows:
Question 1: What distinction do Alecko Eskandarian, Claudio Reyna, and Mike Fisher all hold?
Question 2: What two things do Chris Wingert, Brad Friedel, Danny O’Rourke, Jason Garey, and Brian Maisonneuve have in common?
The answers are as follows:
1. Reyna, Eskandarian, and Mike Fisher all won the Hermann Trophy, the MAC Player of the Year award, and the Gatorade Player of the Year award.
A few comments on these answers. First, as many of you pointed out, they all also played collegiately at the University of Virginia. Second, most of you who missed one of the things they had in common missed the Gatorade award. Third, and this was the only part of the answer that was a little tricky, they all won the Hermann Trophy and MAC POY award before they were merged into a single award. Finally, off this group, the most accomplished player was probably the one you hadn’t heard of- Mike Fisher chose to go to medical school rather than to become a professional player.
2. O’Rourke, Garey, Wingert, Maisonneuve, and Friedel were all Hermann Trophy Award winners who later played for the Columbus Crew.
Let’s take a look and see who knew what-
Almost…
- Mike G.: Partial credit on #1, full marks on #2.
- Andrew M.: Partial credit on #1, full marks on #2.
- Steve G.: Missed the Gatorade part on #1, nailed #2.
- Andrew B.: Missed the MAC part on #1, nailed #2.
Winner!
- Jeff P.
I’ll be back tomorrow with the new challenge!
Damn, I didn’t realize there were 3 different POY awards. So close.
Actually, the Gatorade award is just for high school seniors. The other two are the collegiate awards that were merged into one.
