Just what Liverpool needs: More Americans
I was mowing the lawn about fifteen minutes ago, listening to last night’s “World Football Phone-In” on my iPod. As usual, it was with Tim Vickery and Sean Wheelock; it’s a fun little show, good to listen to, with the occasional interesting tidbit, but it’s more what I’d call background info: I rarely come away from it thinking, “Wow, I need to write about that.”
This episode was somewhat different. First question for Sean, from Dan in Gloucester: “Landon Donovan has been linked to Liverpool in the January window. Would he be any good in the Premiership?”
I’m sorry, what?
Being the diligent blogger that I am, and being as this intersects right between two of the things I write most about here (Liverpool and the U.S. Men’s National Team), I figured that this was a great little rumor that I hadn’t heard anything about. So I went to the internet, expecting to find some story somewhere about it.
Instead, I found…nothing. Absolutely nothing but forum posts and stories about Donovan when he played for Leverkeusen against Liverpool back in like 2005. And I expected as much, since Sean Wheelock pretty much discounted the whole rumor anyways.
Still, though, I can’t help but wonder: how’d that rumor get started in the first place? Is Dan and Gloucester just having a laugh? Is he confusing Donovan with some other MLS player (such as, I don’t know…Conor Casey)? I can’t really tell.
This is where I need your help, readers. Find me this story. Find it in print somewhere, and link it in the comments. Inquiring minds everywhere want to know.
no donovan is not linked to liverpool, and wed be in a sad state of affairs if we were linked to a donovan signing?! he wouldnt save liverpool, in fact he would probably drown liverpool even more, being linked to a medicore american midfelider/ striker watever he is, isnt liverpool status…
I agree with you, actually (although if they could get him on loan and sell off Voronin, that might be a lateral move that raised some cash for something else).
I could give two shits about the Liverpool part, but like you MH, I was frantically trying to find where the “rumor” came from since I write about the USMNT. Can it be a rumor if it doesn’t make the internet? Isn’t that what this thing is for, to spread fake transfer nonsense?
Anyway, as much as I like Donovan as a player (and would argue vehemently about his being “mediocre”), Liverpool isn’t where he should, or likely would, go.
You’re still cutting the grass in November in Cleveland? This reminds me of someone I knew in college who declared for the NFL draft every year. Perhaps the rumor began with Donovan himself.
