Roonaldo at Anfield today? Possibly.
England changed their clocks overnight, a full week before it happens here in America. That’s why the times for today’s matches in England appear to be a bit out of whack. This includes the West Ham/Arsenal match beginning at Noon EDT (which will run it into the start of the NFL games – be aware). It’s a truly odd Sunday calendar today as matches are staggered in some sort of arrangement that’s escaping me.
Obviously, the flashpoint today is Anfield, where United come marching in. These two clubs, Liverpool and Manchester United, are old and ancient rivals. The supporters cannot stand each other, the managers are constantly sniping at each other, and the players aren’t exactly best pals. To exacerbate things, United is once again topping the table and can put a ten-point cushion between itself and Liverpool with a victory today. Liverpool is limping in, to be sure, following four successive defeats. News came out late last night that Wayne Rooney will be fit to play today, but might not be picked to start by Alex Ferguson because of his anger issues during the Liverpool matches. It’s a return for Michael Owen in the colours of Liverpool’s enemy, so if he makes the pitch during the match, the reaction of the Kop should be interesting. Liverpool did the double over United in the league last year, so revenge will be on the mind of the Red Devils. Should be quite a show.
Other matches in the Premier League today sees Bolton hosting Everton, Manchester City home to Fulham, and as previously mentioned, West Ham United hosting Arsenal. MLS’s final regular season day sees Chivas USA hosting Houston and New England traveling to Columbus. To update yesterday, Millwall gave Leeds their first loss as Gary Alexander scored a late winner and the Lions took a 2-1 decision. Telly is below the jump.
