Welcome to Last Call.
We do love it when you all come to visit for these USMNT matches. We wish it were under slightly different circumstances tonight, though. Have to be honest, the events surrounding tonight’s match are not what we had hoped for.
As I’m sure you’ve all heard by now, Charlie Davies (at left), striker for the USMNT (and Sochaux of Ligue 1, the French first division) was injured badly in a post-team curfew car accident. It’s said he will require 6-12 months of recovery and rehabilitation from his injuries, and thus will miss South Africa’s World Cup 2010 next Summer. This incident proved fatal for another passenger in the car, and details are still emerging about the evening in question. Obviously, we want the best for Charlie, we want him to recover so that he can have a normal life. We would love to see him back on the pitch, as well, but his well-being is most important.
The US team qualified for the World Cup with it’s win over Honduras this past weekend, so the pressure to win tonight’s match was not as intense as it might have been. However, assuming that the lads can get their heads into it, I would expect a high tempo and a lot of intensity. They will want to win for their fallen team-mate, of that there can be no doubt. Costa Rica needs to win this match to guarantee qualification, a draw could see them in jeopardy of having to compete in a play-in match against the 5th place side from the South American qualifying pool. All in all, it should be quite an evening. The match kicks off at 8:05 on ESPN2.
What else is going on, you ask? Join me after the jump to find out.
Today, this happened:
- Good news, Browns fans! Brady Quinn is staying put!
- Erin Andrews is doing interviews again.
- Hutchins reports on UF gymnasts who double as felons.
- Bob Irsay (who’s family stole out of Baltimore like they were escaping Alcatraz) says Rush Limbaugh is a bad person. Kettle, you’re black.
- John Wooden turned 99 years old today. Happy birthday, Coach!
- Boise State takes on Tulsa tonight, the Broncs could have their hands full.
- Magary reviews the Pat Tillman book.
Okay, some eye candy and then have at it in comments.

For the ladies (and so-inclined lads), noted footy fan Jamie Foxx:
Let’s go boys! Do it for Charlie!

Mags, RE: Wikipedia
Absolutely, it’s so easy to google something and be able to pull up all the info on something.
I find it strange that people are willing to put that much work into something that’s almost completely anonymous and lacks (almost any) personal opinion or thought.
I’m just hoping Wikipedia doesn’t eventually decide to sue every blog ever for unsourced plagiarism. They’d own the internet.
What up Fuck Knobs?
OOO-SA!!! OOO-SA!!! OOO-SA!!!
And for some reason, on Twitter, one of my followers is David Alan Grier. I posted a tweet a few days ago with DAG’s name in it, and now he’s following me. Weird.
A reverse celebrity stalking? Weird.
No, what’s weird is that out of the blue, for no discernible reason, Bill Engvall is following me.
And OOO-SA!!! OOO-SA!!! OOO-SA!!! (we should be careful that moose don’t decide this is some derivative mating call….)
I’m from Canada eh. That’s not nearly a moose mating call eh. So take off ya hoser.
That sucks. At least my celebrity follower has talent. Suck it Engvall!
Here’s your sign..
He’s just looking for more material for Chocolate News, I’m sure.
I picked up Matt Barkley (and his horrifying leg hair), or, more accurately, Matt Barkley’s corporate image makers. http://twitter.com/QBmattbarkley
Because he cares so much about my ramblings about mediocre football teams.
You take that back, Bowling Green ,UAB and ULM are great University football teams.
I stepped away when it happened, why did the Costa Rica coach get sent off?
Arguing with the fourth official like he was Sir Alex.
That’ll teach him. Only SAF can be an ass to the officials like SAF is.
YEAH!!!
I bet he even called the fourth official “unfit”.
Can someone explain to me how a butcher’s dog is the definition of fitness?
I think it’s something along the lines of: they sprint to get anything that hits the floor.
That makes sense – grazie!
Who was the announcer for the USMNT match? He was pretty good, they should have him do that all the time.
I believe it was Adrian Healy.
It was Healey. I like JP better, and I think Derek Rae is the best play-by-play man ESPN has in the US. I’d imagine we’ll see all of them in South Africa.
If by “In South Africa” you mean “Sitting in a Closet in Bristol” then you’d be correct.
Though I really hope ESPN actually sends people to the biggest sporting event in the world.
I believe ESPN is making a HUGE effort for 2010… Bob Ley is already committed to going as the studio head, along with 2 other anchors plus analysts. I would be shocked if they don’t make an overzealous effort, actually, because they want to look legitimate for the 2016 Olympic rights bidding.
NBC doesn’t have that locked in? I thought NBC had the Olympics as a perpetual property (essentially, I thought it was through 2028 or something stupid).
Adrian Healy – he’s the “backup” international ESPN announcer, or at least he was during the Euros. Better than Dellacamera by quite a bit, I think.
Is it wrong that I laugh uncontrollably when I hear the name “Clint Mathis”, but then I get a little sad when I think about what might have been?
Probably not. I invariably think of Johnny Mathis, and that just isn’t right. For many reasons.
Do you feel sad for Joey Harrington every time you hear his name? No. Do the same for Mathis.
FYI, Tina Fey is on Letterman tonight. And Kristen Bell is on Craig Ferguson’s show.
Mumble, mumble, something about Fey not being the first woman on Letterman… *fades to silence*
Boo to the first, and yay to the second. But also Boo, since that’s far too late for me to be awake (be scouting for video clips tomorrow)
Onyewu torn patella tendon, out 3-4 months!
wow, Sculptor nailed that one as soon as she saw it.
I am not pleased to be correct, mind you.
Ugh. Have we any hope, or are we truly stick with Ching, Cooper and Casey?
Who do we have as a filler center back in the meantime? Do I even want to know?
I only ask because I’m pretty sure Castillo is a left back and Jones isn’t a center back, but I don’t know my specific positions very well yet.
A lot depends on Jay DeMerit’s eye. The US probably wont play any big friendlies until the spring anyways, the worry is the form Onyewu is in when he comes back, and how much time he gets at Milan in the run-up to South Africa.
Actually they play Denmark in November and are looking at playing another in that same time frame.
Michael Orozco, 23 yr old playing in Mexico
Jay DeMerit (injured right now)
Michael Parkhurst
that’s what I pulled out without doing much research.
Orozco’s decent, but Bradley seems to have something against Mexican players. DeMerit would be better than Parkhurst for sure – he seems to be way too small to do anything on the world stage.
I’m not sure how I forgot Kansas City’s cappy, Jimmy Conrad. He wouldn’t be ideal, but he’d provide a bit of veteran stability.
From Soccer By Ives on twitter, “Onyewu has torn left patella tendon. Out 3-4 months.”
@Adam
Here was the announcement for ESPN going to South Africa. Didn’t realize Tirico and Fowler were the other two anchors they plan on sending.
http://awfulannouncing.blogspot.com/2009/06/espn-moving-to-south-africa-for-world.html
Oh yeah, I forgot about that, thank you. Tirico seems a bit odd a choice, but he’s a good guy to help control and push the studip show in a certain direction. As long as Alexi Lalas isn’t there, it’s good by me.
I’m sure ESPN will find a way to cram Tommy Smyth, Julie Foudy and Alexi Lalas in the same halftime studio, and we’ll all be scrambling for our remotes.
If they could get Marcelo Balboa in one of the commentary booths, that would be the coup de grace.
Yeah, sorry to say, you’re probably going to get Smyth and Lalas for sure since they seem to be the “A” list analysts for ESPN right now. But they’ll be on site, and that’s a huge start.
Really nice play by Tulsa to bring their game against Boise State to within 7… fake reverse, deep pass for TD.
Yep, we might have a game after all- I was afraid Tulsa had packed it in.
Howdy all, know it’s been a while, and probably most of you have forgotten who I am. Just a quick question for everyone: has anyone gotten a book published before? If so, could you tell me the best process to make sure I don’t fail and end up like John Kennedy Toole? Much appreciated if anyone can help.
I have no advice for you.
But if you somehow self-publish, don’t tell your family that you’ve got a publisher and an agent. Because they will figure it out, and you will look like a moron (crazy uncle, spent, oh, 600 bucks to get a book published, is a moron).
Not unless you count the pamphlets I pass out every weekend about communism.
I’d shoot emails off to Leitch, Drew, and Ape, they all went through the same thing and are probably the most easily accessible people I could think of off the top of my head.
I tried drew, but I didn’t get a response. Maybe Leitch will actually answer since he’s too afraid to not answer.
If you make a readable, thought out question, Drew Leitch and Ape will all answer. At least they answered my non-rambling questions. Sorry for the rambling answer.
Tulsa looking to make a game of it. Lou Holtz looking to drown everyone in the press box with his saliva.
OK gang… I’m gonna head out, watch the end of the game and get some sleep.
Congrats on a well earned draw folks. Celebrate by… well, not the good booze, but you don’t have to drink off the rails, right?
Bud light: dinner of champions.
Okay gang, I’m also outta here. Thanks for the party, ATD!
Hasta Manana!
Ladies and gents I present you with the list of ungodly athletes:
http://amazinggracebaptistchurchkjv.com/gpage38.html
I notice that a number of the ungodly athletes are on the list for marrying a playmate. I don’t know when things changed, but I thought you were supposed to get married to women. How is what they did before you got married your fault?
This makes none sense. None sense at all.
I don’t know where you find this stuff, but that’s freaking great. Won’t be able to get that song out of my head for a few days.
It’s from deadspin, so I’m not that awesome.
