Yesterday, I took a look at the bottom half of the table, in regards to shirt quality, and today I’ll be taking a look at the top 10 shirt combinations in the league. I was actually surprised because a number of teams had what I thought to be quality home and away shirts, when I figured I’d be more split on them.
As a reminder, I ranked both the home and away shirts individually and then added up their rankings to determine the overall best shirts. So while Everton’s home shirt ranked at the very bottom, their away shirt scored pretty well, bumping them up quite a bit.

10-Stoke City
Home: 6
Away: 14
(yes this was in yesterdays, its in today’s now since I can’t do match) I really like Stoke’s home shirt, it’s probably one of the better done red and white striped shirts I’ve seen. I think it’s the small red bit at the bottom that pushes it over the top for me. Their away shirt is rather boring and looks like it should be a polo shirt that the team wears on their way to a game or something of the sort.

9-Blackburn
Home: 10
Away: 9
Blackburn has a rather classic scheme for their home shirts, and it’s tough to deviate from, but I like the the added touch of red for this seasons shirts. I still don’t like the big black box for the sponsor and wish it would have been done up more like the away shirt, bigger, but without the box around it. The away shirt is a little cheap looking, but when paired with the red shorts and socks Blackburn will wear with it, it looks 10x better. These two shirts look a little too similar, and Blackburn might be forced to wear a 3rd shirt against most teams they’d need their away strip for.

8-Arsenal
Home: 9
Away: 8
Surprisingly, Arsenal are the only team that kept their exact same home shirt from last season. Unsurprisingly, my Arsenal fandom kept me from ranking this lower. I was a bit mad when I first saw it with nothing but a white strip on the sleeves, but I’ve warmed up a bit to it. I’ve really become a fan of the new away kit recently after not liking it very much early on. It’s simple, and the pinstripes are a nice added touch.

7-Fulham
Home: 4
Away: 13
Fulham probably has the largest gap to me between their two shirts. The home shirt looks real good and I wish the Arsenal home top was on the same template. The Away shirt looks worse and worse though the more I see it. It’s got the dreaded ‘training top syndrome’ where the shirt looks like it belongs on during pre game warmups. Perhaps seeing it in action would change my perspective, but something just screams no.

6-Hull City
Home: 7
Away: 6
This is the part where I start to wonder how a shirt got up so high in the ranks. For some reason I really like Hull’s home shirt. I know yesterday I said the clashing sponsor logo colors gave Wolves a knock down the list, but it’s not that bad here, plus the thin stripes look good. I think the reason I ranked Hull’s away shirt so high was just the simple fact that it’s different from all the rest. Every team came out with some dark, boring away shirt while Hull went ahead and took out this extremely bright number.

5-Portsmouth
Home: 8
Away: 2
The home shirt isn’t very interesting, but it’s simple and I absolutely love Portsmouth’s Blue/White/Red kit combo. The away shirt is simple, but it inverses Portsmouth’s color scheme pretty well and I like the two stripes and navy collar.

4-Aston Villa
Home: 5
Away: 5
Villa’s home shirt is classic and I love the baby blue sleeves with maroon, and even though they didn’t change it much, this season’s shirt is awesome. The away shirt is sort of strange with the white and grey sections, but it works. While who sponsored a team didn’t factor into this at all, the look of the sponsor’s logo di a bit. Acorns could well be a gambling company, but their logo looks real nice and simple and the fact that it’s actually a charity makes it even better.

3-Burnley
Home: 2
Away: 3
Burnley and Villa are wearing what amounts to the same set of kits this season, but I like Burnley’s just a touch better. The colors of the home shirt are slightly different, I like the duller blue just a bit more than the bright blue of Villa’s. The white away kit is very simple and has nice accents making it real sharp.

2-Manchester City
Home: 1
Away: 4
I’m a huge fan of baby blue and white, and Man City’s new home shirt is perfect. They’ve had some duds recently, but the sheer simplicity of this one makes it my favorite of the season. Initially I wasn’t too keen on City’s away shirt, but it’s probably one of the better away shirts this season and I kind of like the strange collar it has.

1-Liverpool
Home: 3
Away: 1
Now that I think about it, their rankings probably should be reversed, either way Liverpool wins. Simple, classic Liverpool home shirt we’ve come to expect, and I like black and gold and it’s really well done, so this one gets the nod as the top away shirt for me.
There is no way anyone agrees with probably any of these, so feel free to call me a moron in the comments.
The Royals fan in me adores the new Man City home kit. Perfectly done, didn’t complicate the matter…and they have my favorite road kit in the EPL this season as well.
Who would’ve thought that money could buy you a reserve team of strikers AND good looks?
Also, digging the Arsenal aways … pinstripes + collar = love.
Umbro really impressed me this year with a lot of their stuff. I love the Man City shirt fabric too because it looks like a cotton type material instead of a synthetic. Very classic look, I really want one but I’m growing to dislike City more and more, plus they sold off Elano who was my favorite player of theirs.
Which do you like better though, the Arsenal away or 3rd shirt? I’m a little partial to the 3rd, but they both look good.
Even though their 3rd kit seems to look more like a proper Arsenal jersey, I like their away kit more…but it seems as though they should be swapped around, giving them a dark home kit and white away kit.
I love how only one adidas template made it in the top 10. Goes to show how horrible they’ve been as of late.
-The full Burnley home kit is the best thing in the EPL this year, its timeless and the sock are money.
-Arsenal away…yawn.
-Hull home/away- ick.
-I don’t know, the Fulham away shirt is kind of growing on me- even if it does have the training top “vibe.”
Those Hull City kits are abominations. Truly terrible. The Prem needs someone with a green kit to come up.
I think that green may be “unofficially” reserved for goalkeepers…maybe.
I REALLY like Man U’s white goalkeeper kit.
And speaking of them, I’m sticking with my Ben Foster conspiracy theory.
[...] Premier League shirts ranked. I pray Ed Hardy sponsors a team. [Avoiding the Drop] [...]
I have the long sleeve black and gold Torres Liverpool shirt and I’ve gotten more than my share of compliments on it. You’re right that the rankings should be reversed. I’ll admit that the Man City home shirt is justhismuch better than the Liverpool black.
Thank god you didn’t include the abominable green-gray shirt that they briefly came out with (are they still around?)
that terrible green thing is gone, and in it’s place is the best 3rd shirt out this season. Liverpool absolutely has the 3 best shirts this season.
I’m not surprised nobody else likes the hull shirts, I’m not sure why I even like them so much, I just do.
I do agree that we need to see some green shirts in the prem, sadly only Plymouth Argyle (21st in the Championship) and Yeovil Town (17th in League 1) have green shirts in the League, so doubt we’ll be seeing any anytime soon
