After a week of beta testing, the Thursday Trivia Challenge is now a regular feature.
Each Thursday I will present a new challenge and you will submit your answers to via email at avoidingthedrop@gmail.com
The following Wednesday I will publish the answer(s) to the previous challenge as well as a list of those who got it right. I’ll keep a running total of your successes (and failures) and, at some point, we’ll declare a winner of some sort.
Any questions? If so, you can put them in the comment section. If you have questions or clarifications about the specific challenge, send those via email so you don’t inadvertently reveal the answer or a portion of it.
Off we go!

In the quiet words of the Virgin Mary, ‘Come again?’
I’m not sure what I’m supposed to be doing here.
Not quite grasped this one either!
I think what fuse is looking for is that this was a team that was formed, either national team or club I’m not sure, but for example if you saw this:
GK (Everton)
D (Watford)
D (AC Milan)
etc.
it would obviously be the USMNT
at least I think thats how this one goes
ahh, see what your saying Adam, don’t know many teams that play a 2-6-5 tho, lol
2-3-5 was the de facto formation for a long time, so this could be a really old team.
Well keep in mind the first *, “Players are listed at their natural positions, not the positions they played for this team.” so its more like guys were playing out of position. Also, there are 14 players listed 14-11=3, and I’m sure you can guess what the 3 is.
The notation at the bottom ref. natural positions -v- positions actually played is of some use.
I get it now. Thanks for the follow-ups.
I’m going to guess Team America – 1976 U.S.A. Bicentennial Cup Tournament
El Nene, I think you’re right, but I hid your answer so that others could guess
Oh shit. I was supposed to email my answer. Please accept my deepest apologies.
Not a problem, didn’t want to give away a potential answer, that’s all
and actually your answer was incorrect, but good guess and you’re on (kinda) the right track.
You people are monsters, you know that? I was pulling my hair out for about an hour and a half before common sense kicked in.
Finally figured it out, but I’ll need to do some more research to match the players to the teams.
Diabolical trivia – you’ve outdone yourself this time.
A) I thought this one was pretty “easy,” rather than “diabolical.”
B) As I have told MANY a student, “The footnotes are there for a reason…”
It was hard till you have a “DUH!” moment. Though I didn’t get it myself I saw WSR’s email pretty quickly.
Well, diabolical for a newcomer to the game who isn’t steeped in certain areas of the sport. As I said in my email, I wasn’t familiar with this at all until I researched it today.
It’s cruel until you put together 1+1. Or at least look at two of the teams mentioned and go “Hmmmm, didn’t so-and-so play for them, and what’s-his-name for them? But where did they….OH SNAP!!!”
And since it was you who did the quiz, Fuse, I was completely barking up the wrong tree for a long time.
