With the beloved and prolific Mags on vacation this week it’s up to the rest of us here in the ATD compound to pick up the slack- lest we be exposed for the layabouts and sluggards we truly are. Thus, I bring you the first of many quizzes, contests,* challenges and various other forms of “filler” that will appear on the site this week. Let’s get on with it, shall we?
Challenge #1
Create (and post in the comments section) a league table comprised solely of clubs named after other clubs. A good example: If this were baseball and there was a team called the “Red Sox” in Egypt and a team called the “Cubs” in Bolivia, they would be two of the teams you would chose. A bad example: Choosing the name of the first rec league team you played on as 5 year old.** Got it? Good! Go!
Warning: Populating your table with teams all named “Rangers” or something similar (unless you can prove a link to an older club!) will result in you being banned from the internets. I found at least 18 verifiable teams and many that would be good educated guesses, so no excuses!
Hint: Some of the clubs have been mentioned in recent ATD posts!
The winner will be the one with the biggest league that does not contain clubs that I find not up to snuff. I will choose the winner based on my own criteria. You will not argue with me.
*This being ATD, there will not, of course, be any prizes.
**Unless, of course, like me, you played for Kilkenny Cats, which was an actual team in Ireland from 1966 until 2008.
But, I LIKE to argue with you!
/offstage whispers..
Oh. That’s not what ‘argue’ means? Nevermind then.
I am not sure I understood the rules, so here are teams that are from a different sport with the same name or nickname as current football team. If they have to be directly related to each other, then I don’t think any of these work. Twenty is a “full” league so I stopped there.
1. Dynamo (Houston; Kiev)
2. Rangers (I am assuming this one listing is a gimme and I can stay on the internets)
3. Brewers (Burton Albion/Milwaukee)
4. Cardinals (Woking FC/St. Louis)
5. Eagles (Crystal Palace/Philadelphia)
6. Hornets (Watford/New Orleans)
7. Lions (Milwall/Detroit)
8. Tigers (Hull City/Detroit)
9. Pirates (Bristol Rovers/Pittsburgh)
10. Rams (Derby County/St. Louis)
11. Saints (Southhampton/New Orleans)
12. Spurs (Tottenham/San Antonio)
13. Vikings (Doncaster Rovers/Minnesota)
14. Sharks (Farul (Romania)/San Jose)
15. Angels(IFK Goteburg (Sweden)/Los Angeles of Anaheim)
16. Jaguars (Chiapas/Jacksonville)
17. Indians (Guarani (Brazil)/Cleveland)
18. Patriots (El Paso (USL)/New England)
19. Mariners (Central Coast (Australia)/Seattle)
20. Chiefs (Kazier (South Africa)/Kansas City)
that works for me, but I think he meant soley soccer teams, like Internazionale in Brazil and Inter Milan
Sir,
I’ll thank you not to give away answers.
The Management
I meant just football teams, but kudos to you for doing a heap of research! That being said, because I make up the rules as I go, you’re the “leader in the clubhouse” at the moment!
Well, I’ll just add the one I actually know- the City Stars, of Cleveland and then Nairobi, Kenya.
Some of these are a bit cheap (i.e. I have no idea if they directly drew their team name’s influence from the original club), but here goes:
Chivas de Guadalajara (Mexico)> Chivas USA (USA)
Crystal Palace F.C. (England) > Crystal Palace Baltimore (USA)
Club América (Mexico) > C.D. América (Colombia)
Everton F.C. (England) > C.D. Everton (Chile)
Arsenal F.C. (England) > Arsenal (Ghana)
Santos F.C. (Brazil) > Santos Laguna F.C. (Mexico)
Internazionale Milan (Italy) > Internazionale (Brazil)
Réal Madrid C.F. (Spain) > Réal Salt Lake (USA)
Blackburn Rovers (England) > Shamrock Rovers (Ireland)
Sporting Lisbon (Portugal) > Sporting Gijon (Spain)
Racing Club (Argentina) > Racing Santander (Spain)
Olympique Lyon (France) > Olympique Marsaille (France)
Dinamo Moscow (Russia) > Houston Dynamo (USA)
All I can think of off the top of my head for now.
A few I can think of (Thank you Football Manager!)
Ajax (Holland) > Ajax Cape Town (South Africa)
Liverpool FC (England) > Liverpool FC (Uruguay)
Wolverhampton Wanderers (England) > Montevideo Wanderers (Uruguay again)
Bloemfontein Celtic (South Africa) > Celtic FC (Scotland)
Santos FC (South Africa) > Santos (Brazil)
If we’re not held to direct names, there are…
Arsenal (England) > Arsenal Kiev (Ukraine)
Rapid Bucharest (Romania) > Rapid Vienna (Austria)
Bohemian FC (Ireland) > Bohemians 1905 (Czech Republic)
Internazionale (Italy) > FC Inter (Finland)
Once you hit Eastern Europe you can end up running around all day behind all the “Spartak”, “Lokomotiv” and “Shakhtar” prefixes.
OK…I concede I completely misunderstood…in my defense…Red Sox and Cubs were both used in the examples…
