Quick update on Gold Cup ’09. Lost in all this weekend’s holiday hoopla is the beginning of the CONCACAF’s regional championship kicking off with a double-header in the Home Depot Center in Los Angeles.
Now, as you all know, one of my main gigs in this house of fun is to let you know where you can watch these matches. Unfortunately, it appears that all the matches that DO NOT involve the US team are on Spanish-speaking networks (not that that’s a problem, per se, it’s just a shame that those of us who aren’t bilingual have no alternative choice). So, for tonight’s matches (Canada v. Jamaica and Costa Rica/El Salvador), you’ll have to have access to the following:
8:00 PM EDT – Canada v. Jamaica – Gold Cup ’09 – Galavision (DirecTV Ch. 404)
10:00 PM EDT – Costa Rica v. El Salvador – Gold Cup ’09 – Telefutura (DirecTV Ch. 408)
Now, bear in mind that I’m on the East Coast, and this is important for the second match especially, as the Telefutura channel is out of New York City. You will want to check your local listings for these matches if you’re interested in seeing them. We will do the best we can to let you know what channels will be showing these matches on a daily basis as this tournament moves on, and The Best Eleven has the full schedule mapped out for the group stages. As you can see, the US matches on the 4th, 8th and 11th of July will all be shown on Fox Soccer Channel.
For you USL fans, Austin Aztex v. Cleveland City Stars is on FSC tonight at 8:00 PM EDT.
FYI, if you have the NY area Directv local channels, Telefutura is channel 68 (NY68). Oddly, I don’t get 408, but I do get 68. Either way it’s Telefutura. I offer this up for those who may be in the same odd situation.
I have a channel 28 that is apparently affiliated with Telefutura because they pick up some of the futbol they show. No idea what it all means, I’m just happy to see the matches.
Not sure if anyone is desperate enough to seek out the Gold Cup through different avenues, but depending on the community you’re in, you’ll be able to pick up Telefutura over-the-air on antenna. However, you need cable or satellite to access Galavision – I’m pretty sure it’s a pay-only channel.
