While the transfer market has been a bit non-descript thus far, the managerial domino pattern just keeps picking up speed. Here is the latest:
- Wigan Athletic – It appears that they have targeted Swansea City’s Roberto Martinez. Martinez had been mentioned for the Celtic post, as well, but apparently, that may have been settled.
- Celtic – It appears that Tony Mowbray has won the race (such as it’s been) to become the new manager of the green half of the Old Firm.
- Galatasaray – This shocked me a bit, but the job has been given to Frank Rijkaard, ex-Barcelona gaffer. Rijkaard had been mentioned for the best jobs in Europe, and I’m not looking down at the Turkish giants, but it’s not exactly a high-profile gig. I think this must have been agreed on due to Rijkaard’s cache with the press, and his need to rehab a bit after the 07-08 meltdown at the Camp Nou.
- Palermo – They have caused a real mess by hiring Walter Zenga, who last managed their arch-rivals Catania. This will no doubt turn out well. Catania is now looking for a new manager.
- Atalanta – They named Angelo Gregucci as their new skipper.
- Newcastle United – For now, it’s still Alan Shearer. Mike Ashley is trying to sell the club, and thus, nothing has transpired yet with Shearer. The best news of all, though, is that Joey Barton wants to stay!
- Reading – They have hired Brendan Rodgers as their new boss, replacing Steve Coppell, who resigned after failing to lead Reading back to the Premier League.
- Tranmere Rovers – Sacked their manager Ronnie Moore.
- Port Vale – The League Two side named Micky Adams as their new manager.
