After today’s action, the final 16 for the UEFA Cup have been determined, and based on the draw held in January, we have the matchups for the Round of 16.
Werder Bremen (Germany) v. St. Etienne (France)
CSKA Moscow (Russia) v. Shaktar Donetsk (Ukraine)
Udinese (Italy) v. Zenit St. Petersburg (Russia)
Paris St. Germain (France) v. Braga (Portugal)
Dynamo Kiev (Ukraine) v. Metalist Kharkiv (Ukraine)
Manchester City (England) v. AaB Aalborg (Denmark)
Olympique Marseille (France) v. Ajax Amsterdam (Holland)
Hamburg SV (Germany) v. Galatasaray (Turkey)
AC Milan, Sampdoria and Fiorentina crashed out today. I’m seriously not on an anti-Italian rant the last few days or anything, but what the hell is going on with these teams in these Euro competitions this week? Udinese is the only Italian team left in this particular Cup, and quite frankly, after the CL R16 second legs in a few weeks, might be the only one left alive in Europe at all. As expected, both Spurs and Villa crashed out today, much to their managers delight horror. Olympique Marseille put an end to the great Steve McClaren Experiment this season, so he can go back to his weird accents and whatever else he gets up to. Man City continues the fight, and Aalborg does not perform particularly well in England, so a quarterfinal is a possibility for them.
The next round is held March 12 (Leg 1) and March 18/19 (Leg 2).
The Spanish clubs are on pretty shaky ground as well – the last 2 in UEFA Cup dropped today and only Barca holds an edge out of the 4 in CL 16.
Like the Ajax/OM match-up.
Agreed, I think Ajax v. OM will be the best of the bunch
Dynamo Kiev is in Ukraine, not Russia….calling them Russians is a bit of an insult to them.
Changed it, thanks Mark. Wrote that post quickly and had to look up a few, just missed that one. The break up of Soviet Russia was hard on all of us.
Maybe Yulia Tymoshenko will get wind of your insult and spank you – lucky bastage.
